Dr. Mona Deerwester MD, MSc, FCAP, FASCP Medical Director of Dermatopathology

Dr. Mona Deerwester is the Medical Director of Dermatopathology and serves as a Medical Consultant to the State of California, where she provides her expertise at the state level. She is double board-certified in dermatopathology and anatomic pathology and specializes in the diagnosis of skin diseases across all age groups.

Dr. Deerwester has extensive experience evaluating biopsy specimens to diagnose a wide range of dermatologic conditions, including skin cancer, inflammatory dermatoses, psoriasis, eczema, and other acute and chronic skin disorders. Her work is defined by diagnostic precision and a strong commitment to patient-centered care.

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Dr. Deerwester earned both her Bachelor of Science with Honors in Physiology and her Master’s degree in Physiology and Genetics from the University of British Columbia. During her time there, she received multiple academic distinctions, including the Golden Key Honour Society, the UBC Leadership Award, the Outstanding Achievement Award, and the Chancellor Award.

She completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology at NYU Langone Long Island School of Medicine, where she served as Chief Resident. In 2020, she received the NYU Patient Experience Award in recognition of her dedication to compassionate, patient-focused care during the COVID-19 pandemic. She went on to complete advanced fellowship training in Surgical Pathology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dermatopathology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Deerwester maintains strong personal ties to San Bernardino and is deeply engaged in her role at Pacific Dermatology Institute. She is committed to education, mentorship, and advancing the field of dermatopathology through ongoing research and active participation in regional, national, and international conferences. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Dermatopathology, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists.
